Some may, or may not, have heard of Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme. It is set to commence on the 1st of November and essentially allows you to recycle cans and bottles in return for 10 cents.
This has turned into an amazing learning opportunity for my kids.
We already subscribe to the “Take 3 For the Sea” philosophy. When you go to the beach you bring home 3 pieces of rubbish, we incorporate that into whenever we go anywhere.
There are 4 great things about the new scheme that I’m excited to teach my kids.
- Sustainability: The obvious one is protecting the environment and living our life a little more sustainably.
- Work ethic: My children are still young so collecting bottles for 10 cents is big money for them and they are excited to collect as many as they can. This includes annoying all our relatives for theirs.
- Saving: We are saving the money we earn for “something big.” My little boy is saving to build a house to the moon so he is going to need to collect a few bottles.
- Donations: This is something we do with our kids already, but it can be done automatically at the depots too. We let our kids put a chosen percentage of their money into a donation of their choice. We let them choose the amount. It is always on the shy side of savings but at least they are learning to help others with a portion of their income.
There are some amazing opportunities for lessons with this new scheme so I hope it lasts, otherwise, I get the feeling I’m going to buy a lot of cans and bottles for 10 cents.
